How to Get the Most Out of Your Coaching Sessions

Practical tips for showing up prepared, staying accountable, and making real progress between sessions.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Coaching Sessions

Working with a coach is an investment — of time, money, and emotional energy. These practical tips will help you get the most from every session.

Come with intention

Before each session, spend five minutes thinking about what you want to focus on. What's been going well? Where are you stuck? What felt hard this week? Even a rough idea gives your coach something to work with immediately.

Be honest

Your coach isn't there to judge you. If you didn't follow through on something, say so. The conversation that follows is often more valuable than the original goal. Coaching works best when it reflects your real life, not the version you think your coach wants to hear.

Do the work between sessions

Sessions are the catalyst, not the whole journey. The real change happens in the days between — when you practise the new habit, try the technique, or sit with the uncomfortable question your coach posed. Small, consistent action beats big sporadic effort every time.

Track your progress

It's easy to forget how far you've come. Keep a simple journal or notes app where you jot down wins, insights, and shifts — even tiny ones. When motivation dips (and it will), this record becomes your evidence that change is happening.

Give feedback

If something isn't working — the pace, the approach, the focus — tell your coach. Good coaches welcome this. It helps them tailor the experience to you, and it models the kind of honest communication that coaching is all about.
